Researchers made room in a mouse brain for human tissue to grow and connect. The result is a remarkable research model, and an invitation to describe it precisely.

The first thing to know about the mouse is that its brain was altered before the human tissue arrived. Researchers at Stanford genetically depleted much of the developing mouse cortex, creating space for organoids grown from human stem cells. The organoids survived transplantation, expanded and sent nerve fibers into the host nervous system. In a paper published Wednesday in *Nature*, the team calls the method “xenocortication.”
That engineered vacancy is the achievement. Previous experiments have placed human brain organoids into rodents, but existing tissue limits their room to grow and compete for connections. Here, the graft occupied about 92% of the combined cortical tissue volume measured three months after transplantation in a group of seven mice. The researchers reported graft survival in 25 of 29 transplantation attempts. Those figures describe this experimental system; they are not a measure of how much of a normal mouse brain has become human.
The team found several kinds of evidence that the tissue did more than sit in place. Anatomical tracing showed projections into parts of the mouse nervous system. The graft displayed spontaneous electrical activity. Cell analysis found a range of developing human cortical cell types, including a type that has been difficult to produce in laboratory culture. On some motor and memory tasks, mice with grafts performed differently from mice whose cortices had been depleted without transplantation. After a low-oxygen injury, the grafted mice also showed changes the researchers could observe in their gait.
This is why the work matters to scientists studying human brain development. A dish can sustain cells; it cannot reproduce every interaction inside a living nervous system. The new mice offer a way to follow developing human neurons across a larger connected volume and, potentially, to test how injury or disease changes both cells and behavior. The researchers describe that as a platform for future experiments, not a therapy ready for patients.
There are firm limits to what the results establish. The graft did not have all the features of a mature human cortex. The paper reports incomplete organization into the usual cortical layers and an immature cellular profile. Its authors say it remains unclear whether some synchronized graft activity travels beyond the graft itself. Differences in behavior are useful experimental observations, but they do not show that the mice acquired human thought or experience.
The ethical question therefore deserves better than a science-fiction shortcut. These animals were bred to lack substantial mouse brain tissue, then given human-derived tissue capable of growing and connecting. The researchers say later experiments, particularly ones that produce more mature organization or change the host species, will require early ethical guidance. That concern follows from what the experiment accomplished, even while its current limits remain clear.
The best description is also the most arresting one: scientists created room for human brain tissue in a living mouse, and that tissue developed extensive connections. Whether the model can reliably explain a human disorder or help identify a treatment is work still to be done. The mouse has opened a laboratory door. What lies through it will be decided by experiments that can survive the same close reading.

A small wild cat in Bolivia’s Yungas forest now has a scientific name of its own: *Leopardus tilcayo*. Local communities already called it Tilcayo. Researchers studying South American tiger cats used genetic evidence to identify it as a distinct species, according to a study reported Thursday.
The naming resolves a problem hidden by resemblance. Tiger cats can look similar enough that appearance alone does not reliably settle which lineage an animal belongs to. The team analyzed DNA from cats sampled across several South American countries, including museum specimens, and concluded that the group contains five genetically distinct species. The Bolivian lineage was one of them.
The evidence also marks the limits of the announcement. Researchers examined two living Tilcayo and a small number of camera-trap records, Reuters reported. They know little yet about the cat’s range, abundance or daily life. Scat samples suggest small rodents may be part of its diet; camera traps suggest it may be more active at night. Neither observation can stand in for a full population survey.
That survey matters. Conservation assessments currently group tiger cats more broadly, and the researchers have shared their findings with the International Union for Conservation of Nature for a future review. Counting one newly distinguished species separately could reveal a risk obscured when several lineages were counted together. The Yungas forest also faces pressure from deforestation, agriculture, fires and mining.
A name cannot protect a habitat. It can make a previously blurred population possible to count, study and argue for. The next story is whether people can find enough Tilcayo, soon enough, to learn what it needs.

The Bank of Japan moves its benchmark rate to 1.25%, continuing its long exit from exceptionally cheap money.

The Bank of Japan raised its benchmark interest rate on Friday to 1.25% from 1%, its highest level in 31 years. A quarter-point change is a routine size for a central-bank move. In Japan, the level it reaches is the larger story: policymakers spent decades keeping rates near or below zero in an effort to counter weak prices and encourage borrowing.
Governor Kazuo Ueda described an economy that continues to recover gradually and inflation close to the bank’s 2% target, according to the Associated Press. He also pointed to risks from the war in Iran, currency fluctuations and expanding demand tied to artificial intelligence. Those forces do not all push in the same direction. More expensive imported energy can raise prices while burdening households and businesses.
The decision was widely expected, which helps explain why the immediate market reaction does not read like a referendum on the policy. In Friday afternoon trading, Japan’s Nikkei 225 was up about 1.4%, AP reported. The dollar also rose against the yen. A rate increase and a weaker currency can coexist when traders are judging the likely path ahead, rather than the announcement alone.
For households and companies, the practical question is how far borrowing costs travel beyond the central bank’s overnight rate. Japan’s long period of cheap money shaped expectations about mortgages, business financing and government debt. Moving the policy rate is one decision; adjusting to a different cost of money is a longer process.
Friday’s number gives that process a marker. At 1.25%, Japan has reached a level it has not seen for a generation. What the bank says and does next will determine whether this is a pause on the way up or a rate that stays put.
Robotaxi rides resume in San Antonio after a five-month pause and changes to how the service handles flood risk.

Waymo has resumed robotaxi rides for users who previously had access in San Antonio, five months after an unoccupied vehicle drove onto a flooded road and was swept into the water. No one was injured in that April incident. The company paused local operations, and the flooding problem prompted a nationwide software recall, according to Axios.
The return is limited. Riders can request trips in a defined service area that includes San Antonio International Airport. Waymo says it audited potential flood zones and added location-specific restrictions. Its weather product lead, Robert Chen, said safety guided the pause and the relaunch.
The important detail is that the company has described conditions under which service may stop again. Waymo acknowledges that some weather makes driving unsafe for either an autonomous vehicle or a person, and says it could temporarily pause rides during extreme weather. That is a more useful promise than an unqualified claim that a vehicle can drive itself anywhere a customer wants to go.
A service map is part of the product, not fine print. The airport connection may make the relaunch useful to riders, while the flood-zone restrictions define where the company believes it can operate. The next heavy storm will test how well those boundaries work in practice: whether trips are refused in time, whether vehicles avoid water they cannot assess, and whether riders receive clear information when service changes.
San Antonio offers a public measure of progress more concrete than the number of cities on a launch list. A robotaxi company encountered a local hazard, withdrew, changed its system and returned. The quality of that return will be measured on wet streets.

Fashion Week offers more than a runway. Ground work is easy for passengers to overlook because most of it happens before they reach an aircraft or beyond the terminal window. Freight must be handled; regional flights need workers on the ground. That makes the announced action relevant to travelers and businesses even before its exact operational effect is known.
An announcement, however, is not a disruption count. The available report establishes the union’s plan and the group of workers involved. It does not establish how many flights will be delayed or canceled, or whether negotiations will change the timetable. Those are the facts to watch as the strike date approaches.
For travelers using QantasLink next week, the sensible question is specific: what does the airline say about their flight? For freight customers, it is which shipments depend on the affected ground operations. A labor dispute becomes public news at the point where those answers begin to change.

A taxi that refuses a trip can be maddening. A robotaxi that refuses a flooded road may be doing its job.

Riders will judge those limits by how clearly they are communicated and how reliably they are enforced. They should also regard the existence of a limit as a feature worth asking for.
The technology industry often sells autonomy as freedom from conditions: press a button, summon a car, arrive. Streets have conditions. Rain can turn a familiar route into a different environment within minutes. A service that states where and when it cannot operate makes a claim customers can test. A service that treats every refusal as failure invites its machines to encounter hazards on behalf of a marketing promise.
The refusal must be useful. A stranded rider needs a prompt notice, an honest explanation and enough warning to find another way home. A company should publish the broad rules behind a pause, then examine cases where its system made the wrong call. Riders can reasonably object to needless cancellations while still preferring a car that stays out of rising water.
The standard I would use is simple: when the road changes, can the service change its answer before the car reaches the danger? San Antonio gives us a chance to watch that standard in public.

Marks & Spencer’s arrival at London Fashion Week is easy to greet with either a cheer or a smirk. Both are too quick. The interesting question begins after the photographs: what, exactly, will shoppers be able to buy?
A runway show lets a retailer present clothes at their most persuasive. Styling is precise. Lighting forgives little while making the right things glow. The audience understands that it is seeing an argument about taste. In a store, that argument meets a size range, a changing room and the decision to spend one’s own money. Those are harder conditions, and better ones.
Mass fashion can be inventive. Its reach gives a good cut or color the chance to become part of ordinary life, worn on a train rather than admired from a front row. That is a stronger cultural claim than simply proving a familiar store can stage an elegant event. It also demands discipline: the fit, fabric and useful details must carry the idea without the show around them.
So keep the runway pictures. Then show the garments on the rack, give shoppers the details they need, and let wear decide what lasts. The best possible result for M&S is not that people briefly mistake it for a small luxury house. It is that someone buys a piece at a high-street price, wears it often and remembers where they found it.
