Every ad is a door. Now we know who walked through it.

Editorial line: This edition leads with Citizen Lab’s investigation of spyware delivered through advertising. It separates confirmed findings from exposure, legal allegations from court findings, and supplier growth from sustainable owner earnings.

Citizen Lab Finds Spyware Delivered Through Online Ads

The investigation traces a targeted advertising route to mercenary spyware. An ad impression alone does not prove infection.

By city

Citizen Lab and Confiant published their AdFection investigation on October 15, 2026. They describe how Discover-Tech used targeted advertising infrastructure as a route to mercenary spyware.

The researchers identified attacks on at least 45 Al Jazeera devices during 2024 and 2025 and linked the activity to Candiru with high confidence. Those historical attack dates are distinct from the date of the new report.

The report also identifies advertising impressions on sensitive institutional networks. Citizen Lab explicitly warns that seeing an ad does not establish that a device was targeted or infected. That distinction matters: broad delivery creates exposure, while a confirmed compromise requires separate evidence.

The practical issue extends beyond one advertising account. Users can encounter malicious delivery infrastructure while visiting ordinary sites. Security teams need to investigate evidence of compromise rather than count every ad impression as an infection. The report provides technical findings for that investigation.

Ukraine Reports New Restrictions on Moving Starlink Terminals

The report highlights the military’s dependence on commercial satellite services.

By city

A Ukrainian defense-technology adviser reported that SpaceX imposed a speed restriction on Starlink terminals in motion without advance notice to Ukrainian forces. CNBC reported the dispute on October 14, 2026, in the context of the wider U.S.–Ukraine disagreement over energy infrastructure.

The reported threshold was approximately 160 kilometers per hour. Restrictions on moving terminals can affect how satellite connectivity is used on mobile platforms. The adviser’s account should be distinguished from an independently verified assessment of every affected mission.

The policy question is concrete: a military relying on a commercial communications network needs clear service terms, notice of operational changes and alternatives when access is restricted. The report does not establish the intentions of every company or government involved.

Eight States Sue OpenAI Over ChatGPT Safety Claims

The separate cases allege consumer-protection violations. The allegations have not been established by a court.

By city

Attorneys general in eight states filed separate lawsuits against OpenAI on October 14, 2026, alleging that ChatGPT harmed users and that the company misrepresented its safety. Reuters identified claims concerning children, vulnerable users, dangerous advice and deceptive marketing.

The cases invoke state consumer-protection laws. They are allegations by the plaintiffs, rather than court findings about liability. OpenAI has defended its safety measures and said it provides protections for younger users.

The cases put product design and public assurances before state courts. Their results will depend on the evidence, the applicable statutes and the remedies each court permits. The filings do not by themselves resolve those questions.

AI Suppliers Report Growth. Owner Earnings Need a Separate Calculation.

Current issuer results show strong activity, but revenue, adjusted earnings and cash available to common shareholders measure different things.

By markets

TSMC reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of NT$1,494.24 billion and net income of NT$763.06 billion on October 15. Its fourth-quarter revenue guidance of US$52.3–54.3 billion is a management forecast for a different period and currency. It cannot be substituted for current earnings.

Jabil’s preliminary fiscal 2026 results reported GAAP diluted EPS of US$9.75 and core diluted EPS of US$13.09. Core EPS includes management adjustments. A sustainable earnings estimate must explain which adjustments will persist and which expenses owners still bear.

SMIC’s first-half 2026 statement reported operating cash flow of approximately US$3.207 billion and purchases of property and equipment of approximately US$2.853 billion. This subtraction is a partial cash-flow comparison, not a complete measure of cash distributable to common shareholders.

Our current view is that AI demand has translated into reported growth at several suppliers. It has not yet established an investment edge for the research portfolio. The next useful work is to reconcile financing, ownership, share counts and recurring expenses before comparing normalized earnings with market prices.

Milwaukee Ends a 44-Year Wait by Sweeping the Team That Owned October

The Brewers came from four runs down in Game 4 to dethrone the two-time defending champion Dodgers and reach the World Series for the first time since 1982.

By culture

The Milwaukee Brewers completed a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series on October 15, 2026. MLB’s game report records a comeback from four runs behind and a six-run response to clinch the pennant.

The result sends Milwaukee to the World Series for the first time since 1982. It also reverses the previous year’s NLCS outcome, when the Dodgers swept the Brewers.

The series offers a striking result without requiring a theory about payroll or destiny. Milwaukee won all four games against the defending champions. The next test is the World Series.

Opinion: Ad Security Deserves More Than a Takedown

Citizen Lab’s findings call for investigation and prevention across advertising infrastructure.

By opinion

The AdFection investigation gives the advertising industry a concrete security problem to answer. Citizen Lab identified targeted spyware attacks and described advertising infrastructure that could deliver them. It also warned that an impression on a sensitive network does not prove infection.

Removing an account is one response. The harder work is to detect similar delivery paths, investigate affected devices and reduce opportunities for abuse. Security advice should explain what a protective measure can do rather than promise immunity.

A user should not have to understand an advertising auction to read an ordinary page safely. The companies that run those auctions should explain how they test that promise.

Opinion: Test AI Safety Claims Under Ordinary Consumer Law

The state cases should turn on evidence about the product and its marketing.

By opinion

The state lawsuits against OpenAI raise questions that courts already know how to examine: what a company said, what it knew and what consumers experienced. Applying consumer-protection law does not require treating every allegation as a proven fact.

The claims must be tested, and the company must have an opportunity to answer them. That process can scrutinize safety promises without assuming either that AI products are exempt from ordinary law or that novelty itself proves wrongdoing.

The useful outcome is a clear record of what protections were offered, whether they worked as represented and what remedy the evidence supports.
